Bluebonnet Plague, Explained
Bluebonnet Plague is the Rebel Lion album. It is out on July 27, 2027 — 07.27.27, a date chosen because it looked good and then became load-bearing.
Rebel Lion is Scott Newman, from San Antonio. The record is roughly ten years and a lot of his own money in the making, which is a sentence that sounds like marketing and is unfortunately just an accounting fact.
What the title means
The bluebonnet is the state flower of Texas. Every spring it takes over — roadsides, medians, the cracked edge of a road you drive every day and have never once looked at. It arrives without being asked and you cannot really stop it.
Calling that a plague is the joke, and it is also not a joke. Something spreading where it was not planted, that nobody invited and nobody can contain, is a reasonable description of a flower and a reasonable description of trying to make something for ten years when nobody asked you to.
Something's growing where it shouldn't be. I didn't ask. Nothing that spreads ever does.
The date is locked, the rest is not
July 27, 2027 is fixed. What happens around it is still being built — including a one-night-only show that is currently being funded in public, with the budget published down to the dollar.
Where to hear it now
The album is not out yet, but GAMFC — the track the coffee is named after — is already streaming.

Far enough that there is a browser game about defending bluebonnets from lawnmowers for sixty-nine seconds. If you want to understand the record's sense of humour before hearing a note of it, that is probably the fastest route.
