The Independent Blueprint
These three are on the list partly for the music and substantially for the business, which matters a great deal when you are funding a decade out of your own account.
Chance the Rapper — the proof
The significance is hard to overstate for anyone who was paying attention at the time: he built a major career while keeping ownership, without the traditional deal, and it was not a consolation prize. It was the actual outcome.
Before that, independence was understood as what you did until somebody picked you. Afterwards it was a legitimate path with a worked example attached. That reframing is why a thirty-six-year-old in San Antonio can take his own project seriously instead of treating it as a long audition.
It is also why the budget for the show is published in full. Independence means the people funding you are the audience, and the audience deserves to see the arithmetic.
Childish Gambino — range without apology
Rapper, actor, writer, and then a different musician entirely, repeatedly, with no visible interest in whether the audience approved of the move.
The lesson is not "do many things." Plenty of people do many things badly. It is that the categories were always weaker than they looked, and the penalty for crossing them is smaller than the fear of crossing them.
Which is useful if your project includes a rap album, a canned coffee, a browser game and an award-winning comedic music video.
Logic — work rate
The least glamorous and possibly most practical entry on the whole list.
Logic's output has been enormous and extremely consistent, and whatever anyone thinks of individual records, the volume itself is instructive. He treated it as a job you show up to rather than a state you wait to be in.
Ten years on one album is the opposite of that, and I am aware of the irony. Part three is about exactly this failure. Looking at someone who simply finishes things, repeatedly, was part of what eventually made me pick a date and say it out loud.
And Domo Genesis, briefly
The quiet one. Restraint, and a complete absence of interest in being the loudest person in the room. When every other lesson on this list points toward more, somebody needs to represent less.
The influence map
This is one stop on a longer list. The whole thing is in From Modest Mouse to Eminem.
